The Do you read art?! series is a collection of interviews produced by Valentina Galossi in Berlin in 2021.  In each episode, Galossi delves deep into the minds of visual artists, uncovering their personal connections to the world of art books and how it has influenced their own works of art. This is Episode 1 featuring Michael Sayles, a British painter born in Birmingham and currently based in Berlin. Sayles employs common canvases as a starting point, experimenting with pencil, paper, and glue to create intricate structures and add three-dimensionality to the flat canvas. His work is a fusion of African iconography, colonialism, and Central African influences. During the episode, Michael will discuss the art book “The Last Supper” published by Phaidon, and showcase the creation process of his remarkable large-scale painting “Hic Niger Est.”
